How's that for dramatic? Actually I just need to stop trying to do so many different things at once. I have way too many projects going. :-)

I am still not finished painting my kitchen island... let me rephrase that, the island is painted, but the doors and drawers are not yet painted, and of course I still need to distress it. Since my friends and family have been <strike>hounding me</strike> pleasantly inquiring on the status of the kitchen and asking for updated photos, I thought I should go ahead and post an update.

I purchased a metal scroll piece (sorry, I don't know what it is called) at Hobby Lobby (half off, of course), and asked my tile guy if he could hang it on the tile and build a frame around it. I absolutely LOVE how this turned out.

How about a before shot first (yes, the tiles on the counter and backsplash are indeed the same tiles that were used on the floor):

The corbels have not been painted yet either. I think I have decided to paint them the same color as the island... unless I change my mind again. :-) I hope to have it all finished by the end of the week. Wish me luck.
The corbels for the bar area. These corbels are 14" long by 8" deep and I found them locally for just $37 each... a great price for corbels that size. Much better than anything I found at Lowe's or Home Depot. The brand is Du Bois in case anyone in interested.
The granite and tile guys are finishing up today, so I will post some after photos in the next day or so.
Thanks for stopping by.

I saw a pretty Fourth Of July wreath made with red, white, and blue roses (on Lillian Vernon website). However, the wreath was much too small for my front door. While in Dollar Tree, I noticed they had red, white, and blue carnations... perfect for making my version of the wreath! I bought several bunches of the carnations and picked up a wreath form.
Well... two of the plants didn't make it, so I needed to come up with something to fill the void. I shopped the house and found some unused candle sticks for the one side and decided a moss ball for the other side would look good.

Here is the before (when the plants were still alive):

I just spread the glue onto the ball and smashed the moss into the glue. Very quick. Very easy. Very messy (the reason for the plastic under my project, I just carried the plastic outside when I finished and shook it off in the grass).
I believe I paid about $20 for the clock and I LOVE it. My mom has always admired the clock and the two of us have searched everywhere for one like it (that is affordable). No luck. So this year I decided that I would make her one for Mother's Day.

Here is a photo of the clock I purchased at Kirkland's. It is sitting on the top shelf of one of the shelves to the side of the fireplace. I removed one of the shelves to make room for it.

Here is a photo of the knockoff clock I made for mom.

Mom loved her new clock. If you want to know how I did it... keep reading. :-)

First I needed to find something to make the clock base. I checked Lowes and Home Depot for a pre-cut wood circle, however they didn't have one large enough and those things are HEAVY. Then I thought about using the round top from one of those decorating tables, the kind that has three legs than screw in the bottom and you cover with a table cloth. It seems no one sells them anymore in my area and the ones I found online were very pricey. Finally, at Hobby Lobby I was looking at the foam core board... it was large enough... only $5.99... perfect!

I took my clock down and put it on top of the foam core board, traced it then cut it out with an exacto knife. To smooth the edges, I used a very fine grit sand paper. You could also get a perfect circle by putting a push pin in the center of the foam core tied to a string with a pencil on the end.

Next I painted with red spray paint. It took about 5 coats of paint to get an even coverage. I probably should have used black foam core instead of white. I think it may have been easier to cover with the red paint.

I purchased the clock parts at Hobby Lobby. The kit with the pendulum had hands that were way too small for this clock. I found another kit that had large hands and also came with vinyl numbers. I was very excited to find this kit because that meant I didn't have to paint the the numbers on freehand. :-) All clocks were on sale for half off that week, so they let me have the clock kits at half off as well.

I found the center of my clock and cut a hole with the exacto knife for the clock mechanism. The large clock kit came with a template for adding the numbers, so that was pretty easy to do. It is easier for the spacing to add the twelve and six first then the three and nine then fill in from there. However, I didn't use the number six since I would be cutting a hole for the pendulum.

Once I had all the numbers on, I used a gold paint pen to trace around them.

If you look back at the clock I purchased, it has some metal gold accent pieces at the top and bottom of the clock. At Hobby Lobby, I found the package of buttons in the scrapbook section and the metal piece I used for the top portion was in the jewelry section.
I have always loved fountains and the sound of water... so relaxing. However, to purchase a premade water fountain can be a bit pricey. What is a DIY girl to do? I had to try it for my self. I love how it turned out... What do you think?
I will show you what I did, but keep in mind I am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. I completely made this up as I went along, so I am sure there is a "right" or "better" way.

Here is what I used:

1 large flower pot (approximately 18" in diameter)
1 small flower pot (approximately 8" in diameter)
1 fountain pump (70 gph)
1 nozzel kit (to make the water come out pretty)
2 bags of marble rocks
1 pkg of tubing
1 pkg of wood ball knobs
Elmers craft bond cement

I spray painted both the flower pots brown so they would match. The large flower pot had a drain hole in the bottom, however it was not large enough for the plug end of the pump to fit through so I used hubby's drill to make it larger. Then filled the hole (all around the cord with silicone) so it wouldn't leak. I also spray painted the wood ball knobs brown and glued them to the bottom of the large pot (this is so the cord would be able to come out the bottom without tilting the pot).

The first time I used white caulk to fill the hole... this was wrong... it will leak. I removed the caulk and used Silicone... perfect!

After the silicone dried, I added a little water to make sure the seal was water tight. It was... Woo! Hoo! Then I attached the tubing to the pump and started adding the rocks. (If you are using the marble rocks, be sure to rinse them first because they have a lot of dust).
I failed sewing in high school, I mean I miserably failed. It was not pretty. However, I sewed drapes for my master bedroom and living room... Go Me! I can sew a straight line so each panel is sewn with four straight lines… very simple.

I found the fabric at Hancock's in the clearance section for $5.99/ yd, so if I messed it up it wouldn’t be too big a deal. My ceilings are pretty tall so each panel needed 3 ½ yards with a total of four panels in each room. There is a one inch hem on each side and the bottom, then a four inch hem at the top so that it would be thicker and therefore maybe hang better (I think it worked, I got the look I was going for). I used curtain ring clips and hung them Nester Style (fold and clip)... thank you Nester for the easy instructions, I need easy. :-)

I found that curtain rods are very expensive, especially when you need sixteen feet, so I purchased two eight foot closet rods for each room (a total of four rods) and spray painted them with espresso spray paint then added finials to each end. In the middle where the rods meet is covered by the bracket. I used three brackets in each room.

Here are the living room drapes:
The bedroom drapes... it was difficult to get a good photo because of the light coming in the windows, hopefully you can get an idea of what they look like. The fabric is chocolate brown with a blue dot cluster and the walls are the same shade of blue as the dots. Here is a close up of the fabric:
I actually made this project about 4 years ago, long before I knew what a blog was, so I don't have any step by step photos.

Here is the corkboard from Ballard Designs that I fell in love with...

Of course I was not willing to pay that much for a corkboard... so what's a crafty DIY kinda girl to do? I went to Hobby Lobby's clearance section and found a (kinda ugly and a weird gold color) frame on clearance at 80% off. I spray painted it black and inserted a metal frame corkboard (one that my son was no longer using). I used small finishing nails to hold the corkboard into the frame... lightly tapped the finishing nails into the frame and then bent them over to hold it in place. The silver border from the corkboard showed through the front of the frame, so I painted that too. I am pleased with the results. I think this project cost about $20 total. Not too bad.
A great place to keep all my inspiration photos. The paint swatches are shades of green that I am thinking about for my studio and the wreath I tore out of a magazine... I think it might be my next project. :-) Thanks for stopping by.
Then I saw on another blog something similar with a name added… loved it! Unfortunately, I don’t remember what blog I saw it on; if I can find it I will update this post with the info. Here is the Ballard Designs photo:

Dafont.com offers a lot of free fonts, that is where I found the monogram. I used microsoft publisher to create my my image and sized it to 8 x 10 then printed it on 8.5 x 11 linen textured cardstock. The linen texture kind of gives it the look of being printed on canvas… however, I don’t think this shows up in the photo.

I found my frame at Big Lots for $7 and spray painted it black… it is actually a solid wood frame, not plastic, a great find.

The frame came with a very nice double mat too, a nice textured cream colored mat with a silver second border mat toward the inside. The cream color didn’t work with my color scheme, so I painted it with an inexpensive craft paint and left the silver part of the mat as is.
It is so easy to get in a rut and end up cooking the same thing over and over again. When I saw the recipe party over at Remodelaholic, I thought it would be a great way to try something new. I am sharing one of our family favorites... Italian Chicken & Noodles. It is very easy to make, you just need a crock pot or slow cooker... depending on where you are from.

I have been making this for so long, I don't remember where I orginally found the recipe. However, I have changed it to fit our tastes, so it is not in it's original form. Here is what you will need:

Boneless skinless chicken breasts (I use 3, if you have a larger family use a few more)
1 cup of white wine* (nothing special, just what you get at the grocery store).
1 8oz pkg cream cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup (or cream of mushroom, whatever you have)
1 envelope of Italian salad dressing mix ( I sometimes use other seasonings... you can really adapt this to whatever you like)
1 pkg noodles (We like the no yolk egg noodles, but I have also used just about every other type of noodle... elbo, spiral, spagetti, etc... whatever I hapen to have on hand)

Place the chicken breasts, wine and Italian mix in the crock pot and cook on low for about 4 hours or until chicken is done. Using two forks, shred the chicken (I do this right in the crock pot), add the cream cheese and soup and let cook while you cook the noodles according to pkg directions (leave juices in crock pot). I like to cook the noodles just until not quite done (al dente?) and then add them to the crock pot. This way they soak up some of the juice and have more flavor. The cream cheese should be soft by the time the noodles are finished. Stir the chicken, cream cheese, soup mixture and add the cooked noodles (if too thick, add more wine*). Let cook about 30 minutes until noodles are good and done. Enjoy!

*If you don't do wine, you can substitute chicken stock. I do this when I am out of wine, it is still very good.

Sorry I don't have any photos to share, maybe next time I make it I will take a photo. :-)BLJ Graves Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00713438328434519579noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3956644834934533818.post-68333230094538732142010-03-29T17:11:00.007-05:002010-03-31T08:09:15.442-05:00Ready For SpringI am so ready for Spring and warm weather. When we moved from Tulsa to Midland I had to leave all my house plants with my parents. They will be bringing them to me at the end of April, but I really wanted some greenery in my house NOW.

Thank you Home Depot for sending me a B1G1 coupon for house plants, thank you Ballard Designs for the inspiration and Thank you to Hobby Lobby for having all the garden items half off last week. :-)
I used my sewing machine on the front and inside of the card. The cupcake is paper pieced together and attached with pop dots, and the "sprinkles" on the icing are little metal accents. The inside of the card has a poem written by the little girls parents.
The first three sets I made using some rub-on's I have had sitting around for way too long. I thought they would be great for graduations, promotions, engagements, etc.
The next three sets I created with digital stamps (my own design). I like using digital stamps because I can change the size or color to fit my project and they don't take up any space in my studio.
I originally had them organized in CD cases like I had seen on several blogs
This storage system did not work well for me, I really wanted something that would contain them all in one place. While in Hobby Lobby last week I came across a binder designed for storing clear stamps, it contained pocket type inserts... perfect! I purchased some 8.5 x 11 magnet sheets and cut them in half (so I had 8.5 x 5.5) this fit perfectly into the pocket inserts. Now all my dies are stored in the binder... I love it.
It has been quite some time since my last post. The move definitely has been a lot of work, and I still have more boxes to unpack. I was in need of a little creativity break though, so I took some time to make these cute little tags. I love the look of the black crown on the kraft cardstock. Thanks for stopping by.
Looks like closing on our new house has been delayed until Thursday, so we will be in the hotel for a little while longer. The girls (two little Min Pins) are getting restless with no yard to run in. I am sure they will be happy to be able to run and play again soon.

Here is a card I made last Christmas.

I stamped the poinsettia twice with Versamark on blue cardstock and embossed them both with silver glitter embossing powder. Next I colored them with the Pearlescent Watercolors, cut them apart and layered them with dimensionals. I used the large square and scallop Nestibilities for the mat and more of the silver glitter embossing powder on the edges of the blue mats. The Pearlescent Watercolors really added a lot of shimmer to the poinsettia… the photo just doesn’t capture it that well. Thanks for stopping by.
Once we get to Texas, we will be in corporate housing until after Christmas, so I won't be decorating at all this year. Needless to say, I am feeling the need to do something Christmassy and thought I would make a card. I purchased one of the DCWV stacks of scrapbook paper a few years ago and still haven't used it all... so all papers on this card are from that stack.
I loved that she painted her island black so her island became my inspiration.

When I told the hubby that I planned to paint our kitchen island black, he went out and bought me an electric sander.... such a brave man. :-) I waited until he was out of town for a week to tackle the project. I wanted to have plenty of time, just in case I totally messed it up.... you know, so I could call in the pros if I needed to.

Here are a few before photos. Nothing really wrong with my island, I just wanted more of a piece of furniture type of look.

Notice how there is no trim along the bottom and you can see the screws? That bugged me from the day we moved in. The first thing I did was carefully remove the corner trim pieces so that I could reuse them. Then I removed the door and drawers and sanded everything down (with my new electric sander) then primed with a tinted primer and painted with black Valspar paint. I bought some trim pieces at Lowes and used a miter box to cut them to size. It was a pretty easy project. Here are the after photos.
Be sure to go check out all the inspiration. :-)

So our house is now officially on the market... I have cleaned, decluttered, painted, rearranged, etc and quite frankly I am tired. Since my studio is cleaner than it has ever been, I thought it would be a great time to post photos of it.

It is just me and hubby here, so I am fortunate enough to have the upstairs to myself. My studio consists of a game room (my studio) and a bedroom (my office) and a bathroom (so I don't have to go downstairs). I love all the space that I have, however I don't like being upstairs away from the action. In our new house (in Texas), my studio will be in the office right off the living room... I really think I will like that better, however I will definitely have to keep things tiddy.

This is the view when you come up the stairs into my studio, my office is to the left. I have two desks together in an "L" shape so I can have a friend over to play. The two doors are a closet with lots of shelves... the shelves are very full with my supplies. I saw the desks in Ballard Designs catalog and loved them... but I didn't love the price. I found very similiar desks at Target for a much more budget friendly price and found the baskets at Michaels, on sale of course.

This space looks down at the front door... so I can see who is there before I go down to answer the door. :-) If it's a salesman, I don't waste a trip down stairs. Seriously, this opening lets in a lot of natural light. It would be very dark up here without that opening, and the girls (my two little Min Pin's) love to stand there and look out.
The cork board is similiar to one I saw in the Ballard Designs catalog and again the price was a bit much for my taste... so half off frame sale at Hobby Lobby plus one can of black spray paint plus a standard office corkboard that I already had and there you have it. Same look, much less expensive. :-)
She is giving away a $25 gift certificate to Pottery Barn... what girl couldn't use that? While you are there, be sure to check out her blog, I promise you will find many nifty ideas.

Now for my tags.... you can never go wrong with birds and bird nests. I stamped them on ivory cardstock with chocolate ink then aged them with tea dye ink and added a little blue to the eggs. Thanks for looking!
Reason being, we found out we will be moving to Texas at the end of December so I have been very busy with getting our house ready to go on the market... painting, cleaning, rearranging, etc. as well as making a trip to Texas to purchase a house. We were lucky enough to find one on our first trip there. So much to do.

I did find time to make some cute Christmas tags (a little sanity time for me) yesterday. I think they would look great attached to a hostess gift, bottle of wine, baked goods, etc. Thanks for looking.
I have never been one to decorate for Halloween, not sure why, just never did. However, a few weeks ago, Carole and I were at the Dollar Tree and I saw the skulls, eyeballs and hands. I thought for just a dollar each, what did I have to lose? Maybe I could come up with something. I have seen several similiar displays around blogland decided to give it a try. The jars are from my studio, they usually hold ribbon, I just took out the ribbon and added the Dollar Tree items. Quick and Easy. Thank you for visiting.
Be sure to go by and check out all the fabulous deals and if you have an Etsy shop, be sure to add a link to your special.
