I actually did this makeover back during the summer and am just now posting photos... yes, I am THAT on top of things. :-) Back in May, The Thrifty Decor Chick posted her kitchen island makeover. I loved that she painted her island black so her island became my inspiration.
When I told the hubby that I planned to paint our kitchen island black, he went out and bought me an electric sander.... such a brave man. :-) I waited until he was out of town for a week to tackle the project. I wanted to have plenty of time, just in case I totally messed it up.... you know, so I could call in the pros if I needed to.
Here are a few before photos. Nothing really wrong with my island, I just wanted more of a piece of furniture type of look.
Notice how there is no trim along the bottom and you can see the screws? That bugged me from the day we moved in. The first thing I did was carefully remove the corner trim pieces so that I could reuse them. Then I removed the door and drawers and sanded everything down (with my new electric sander) then primed with a tinted primer and painted with black Valspar paint. I bought some trim pieces at Lowes and used a miter box to cut them to size. It was a pretty easy project. Here are the after photos.
Pretty and black and no more ugly screws showing.
I even added a small decorative wood piece to the corners. I love how it turned out.... and now I am moving and I will miss it very much. :-)
Thanks for visiting.

Somehow, in my mind, I cannot see you in your high heels doing even one part of this project. How can I envision you, in your Corvette, going shopping for trim at Lowe's? it does not compute and the WARNING light is flashing frantically. However, you did a great job! I am impressed. What pros did you end up calling? ;-) I might need them sometime!
Steve would like to see close-ups of your mitering on the corners...
It's beautiful!! I've always wanted an island cooking area but my kitchen isn't big enough for one.
Wow - it really does make a great impact. Even watching the transition first hand, I can't believe the difference.
wow - that's just fabulous! I simply would never have attempted something like this!!
This is georgeous! Thanks for posting- it is inspiring to see the transformation.
Great job in getting it done so quickly, too.
Love it!!!! You did a great job!
Your island looks fantastic! It's amazing how much paint can transform things. Someday I will learn how to use a miter box, but it kind of scares me. :) Good job with the trim.
That looks amazing! Great job - it really transforms the whole look of the island : )

If yuo're moving, you'll just have to do the same thing to your NEXT island! This one is too pretty to not replicate once you get where you're going. :) Great job!
Gorgeous! That's almost exactly what I'm planning to make my island look like.
You did wonderful!!!!! I love painting islands for clients! And every room needs a touch of black! Great job!

Great job on the island.... it's beautiful!
It's sad you have to leave it. I have a plain-jane island, too. I might have to go this route.
